IPNS IPv6

Services > IPv6

The Internet has now become pervasive and continues to grow at a rapid rate. The Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) has been, by any measure, the most successful network protocol ever deployed and has worked remarkably well for 30 years. With the rapid growth continuing unabated, what was once viewed as a limitless resource is now being pushed to the limit: the IP address. Even with the 4 billion IP devices that can be supported using the 32-bit address space of IPv4, address depletion is increasingly a concern.

IPv6 is the foundation upon which the next Internet will be built. Developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) during the 1990s, IPv6 has quickly received worldwide acceptance, allowing all countries to participate.

What does this mean to your agency?

  • Impact ALL of your IT investments, software and devices - even the phone system - in a way similar to "Y2K"
  • Create vulnerabilities and risk that may compromise your information security and privacy if not carefully managed
  • Create new opportunities for advanced communication and applications, since the Internet is also transitioning to IPv6

When do you need to do it by?

  • Effective immediately, new software and hardware must interoperate with Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) and have available IPv6 technical support
  • By June 2008, you must transition its network backbone infrastructure to IPv6
  • By June 2008, you must provide a migration path and commitment to upgrade to IPv6 for all new software and hardware developed / acquired after July 2005
